Firelighting with Beavers
Beavers had an evening outside in the dark around the firepit using flint and steel, cotton wool with and without petroleum jelly, gas lighters and creating kindling from large twigs and potato peelers. The Beavers were challenged to discover and understand the difference between lighting a cotton wool ball on its own compared to lighting one smothered in petroleum jelly.
Whilst the Beavers were practising their fire techniques the young leaders built a fire in the middle ready for the last activity of the night, the toasting of marshmallows, always a popular activity on any night involving fire.
