Running your Section
Everything you need to support you to run an amazing Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop.
Quality Programme Checkers
The Quality Programme Checker is a tool designed to help us all to review our programmes, and to support us to deliver consistent quality Scouting. This is a tool that can be used by Section Leaders and their leadership team, as an opportunity to reflect on the programme from the term or year. It uses a Red Amber Green (RAG) system in order to help identify successes and any areas where the programme can be improved. The Scout Association has recently updated the Quality Programme checkers, and these can be found by following the hyperlink below

- All young people regardless of their abilities, can enjoy and achieve
- What we mean by Relevant
- Young people shape the programme based on what they want to learn and explore
- Ensuring the needs of every young person are met
- Responding to what young people are currently inquisitive about and reflecting this in the programme
- What we mean by Rewarding
- Developing skills for life, including teamwork and leadership
- Supporting young people with their progression through the sections
- Young people are excited about Scouting, having fun and increasing in confidence
Supporters and Campaigns
In this section you will find many resources to aid you in the planning and delivery of your section programmes.
In the supporting partners section, you will find different activities towards different badges with each activity resource outlining the activity, equipment and time required for the activity and some top tips for when running the activity.
If you are managing a community project or working towards the world challenge award you may want to check out the A Million Hands section where you will find different activities, that aim to educate young people about some of the challenges in the world and how we as scouts can do our bit for our communities to make the world a better place, created by different organisations such as Save the Children and Mind.
Scouting is all about young people working in partnership with adults so make sure to check out the Youth Shaped page to ensure Youth Shaped Scouting is embedded in your section. In the section you will find resources and information to help you achieve this including the YouShape Activity Post Cards, leaders’ guides to peer leadership, support material for young people on executive committees and much more. We hope you found this section useful and are able to find what you need.
Other programme activity resources can also be found on:
- The programme activity database on OSM which can be searched by text, badge point and useful tag
- The activity finder on the national Scouts website which can be filtered on timeframe, group size and cost
- The programme planning tool on the national website which supports you planning for a goal or a badge
Covid-19 Pandemic Help
Socially distanced Scout activities
We’re Scouts and even during a pandemic we have a plan B (and C) up our sleeve. The Scouts have put together some ideas to keep you going, whoever you are, and wherever your meetings, activities, and adventures are happening.
If you’ve enjoyed other COVID-19 safe adventures, activities, or games, please the national team know. We’d love to give your bright ideas the platform they deserve.
Scouts at home
While we’re not meeting face to face, you can still carry on with Scouts.
As the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) causes schools to close and many people to isolate, these are challenging times for everyone. But it’s been heart-warming to see Scouts across the UK responding in such positive ways. The prospect of keeping up with connecting, learning and helping, feels like a way to maintain a sense of community and lightness during this time.
Please keep up that Scouts’ spirit. We’ll be sharing more details on how to keep Scouts going at home, so we can bring young people together virtually and still help out in our communities.
