GSL’s Welcome

On behalf of myself as Group Scout Leader and the entire 1st Shiremoor Scout Group, I offer a warm welcome to our Website and our Scout Group. 1st Shiremoor Scout Group was established on the 23rd March 1950 and in 2020 and we are celebrating our 70th Anniversary. We are a vibrant and exciting Scout Group with over sixty young people supported by Leaders and Parent Helpers who all enjoy the fun and adventure that Scouting brings.

We aim to give children and young people ranging from 6 to 14 years of age, the opportunity to build Skills for Life through our varied and dynamic section programmes (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts). We offer new and challenging experiences designed to develop the self confidence of our children and young people, to set aside and leave their individual comfort zones in order to truly learn and develop through the challenge and adventure of Scouting. The Scouting experience ensures that children and young people develop respect, core life long values, appreciation of culture and diversity, as well as making long lasting friendships. At 1st Shiremoor we aim to make our World a better place, through making an impact in our communities be it through learning about recycling to networking with visitors from other community organisations and groups. We also learn new skills such as first aid; fire lighting, pioneering, shelter building and backwoods (outdoor) cooking.

ScOUTs like to get ‘out’. Our children, young people, Leaders and helpers always enjoy getting out and about having new adventures. This can be at small group or family camps, conservation weekends with the National Trust at Cragside, activities such as orienteering, wide games and sports themed nights. Annually we also attend a Scout Adventure Activity Centre at Kielder Forrest and in 2021 we are planning a similar outdoor activity weekend in the Lake District. The highlight of Scouting in Northumberland is the twice-yearly MARRA Camp. Over 3000 young people attend this themed camp with a plethora of fantastic experiences, challenges and fun activities. In 2018 we all became Pirates with all hands on deck at Pirate MARRA!

We take pride in designing our Scouting section programmes in a way that appeals and stimulates the children and young peoples’ interests and needs, in order to ensure they are fun and engaging. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are rewarded for their efforts and hard work by a series of staged badges and other top Scouting awards. We are proud to truly value Youth Shaped Scouting and our young people are at the centre of all of our planning. We value the individual differences of all of our children and young people and ensure they are equipped with the skills they need to succeed in life. 1st Shiremoor like all Scout Group’s is inclusive in its approach to Scouting. We truly embrace and value diversity and difference and sincerely believe nothing is a barrier and that all children and young people, regardless of their individual needs, should have the opportunity to experience and embrace Scouting.

The group is lead, managed and supported by a group of extremely dedicated and committed volunteers. They freely give up their time to enable our children and young people to gain Skills for Life. However, we are always open and receptive to new Leaders and volunteers, or parents that may even have a skill or hobby that they can share with any of the sections within the group. Given my own experience it is fair to say that once you have dipped your toes into Scouting, you will soon become addicted to something so positive and incredibly life changing. There is a wealth of training and development opportunities and some of our qualifications are recognised professionally. If you have what it takes we would love to hear from you. We truly welcome and value all of our team, which is the essence of Scouting and at 1st Shiremoor we believe that our shared knowledge equals our shared successes. We are incredibly proud to be a popular Scout Group, with our membership numbers in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts showing consistent growth. If you have, or know of a child or young person interested in joining the Scouting movement, I actively encourage you to contact us. This is an exciting time for 1st Shiremoor Scouts with lots of exciting new developments and plans afoot. So whether you are a child, young person or adult we challenge you to come along and see what 1st Shiremoor Scouts are all about!

Yours in Scouting!
